In December 2009, Mountain Projects, Inc. Head Start received an ARRA Grant award in the amount of $672,498 to serve Early Head Start children ages 0 to three years. There will be a total of 40 slots in Haywood and Jackson Counties. Early Head Start, much like the Head Start Program, is a comprehensive program for low-income eligible children and families. The Early Head Start Program is free for income-eligible families Monday through Friday 8:30-2:30. Head Start and Early Head Start both offer an extensive variety of services such as: comprehensive screenings in health, development, social/emotional, speech and dental. Families are assisted with agencies that provide needed services such as: rental assistance, Medicaid, food stamps, employment or educational opportunities. Both programs offer a state approved curriculum and offers services to special needs children. To apply in Haywood County call (828) 452-1447 and in Jackson County call (828) 585-2345.
